All dogs mark their territory by leaving small amounts of urine but the male will do so more often than the female. The scent will enable the dogs to identify the age, gender and rank control of dog that has marked a particular spot.
Male dogs also have a special fondness for vertical surfaces, such as trees or sides or corners of building. Height is important because it establishes rank.
Both males and females may also scratch at the ground and kick the dirt after urinating to spread their scent to claim a larger amount of territory..
